Johansson was born in New York City, and raised there by her architect father and producer mother. Hunter was twin to their younger sisters. At the age of seven years old, her passion for acting had increased. She began to audition for commercials. After that, she was enrolled in the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute and then went to the Professional Children's School in Manhattan for further training in her craft. In her early years she appeared in Sophistry together with Ethan Hawke and made her movie debut at Rob Reiner's North in 1994. Johansson was next seen on screen in Just Cause (1995), prior to her breakthrough by starring in Manny & Lo - a tale about two sisters who are orphans who escape. Next, she received the praise of critics for playing the role of a teenager who suffered an accident that resulted in her being damaged on screen in The Horse Whisperer (1998). She gained more attention for her performance in Ghost World (2002) as the self-deprecating outcast Rebecca. Similar to other novice actresses, she honed her skills in the theatre. She also worked in other projects throughout the USA and Canada, but Wildflower was her first stage show. She attended in the Stonestreet Studios Conservatory, part of the New York University Tisch School of the Arts.
